This is How I Landed My First Advisory Board Project!

Freelance medical writers can earn significant income through advisory board projects and enjoy opportunities to collaborate with leading professionals and stay up to date with medical advancements. However, finding clients for this project requires an understanding of how an advisory board meeting operates. That's why I share with you three important stakeholders for ad boards and tips on how to capture their attention to land your first project.

Medical Communication Agencies

Medical communication agencies (medcomms) serve as intermediaries between pharmaceutical companies and healthcare professionals.

To tap into this network, follow these strategies:

  • Attend industry events, such as medical conferences and symposiums, and meet with their representatives.
  • Engage in meaningful conversations and exchange contact information to follow up afterward.

Pharmaceutical Companies

Pharmaceutical companies frequently organize advisory board meetings to gather insights from key opinion leaders.

Here are some ideas to position yourself to work with them:

  • Conduct thorough research on pharmaceutical companies and their upcoming projects.
  • Reach out to relevant departments, such as medical affairs or clinical development, and express your interest in collaborating on advisory board projects.
  • Highlight your experience in medical writing and your understanding of the therapeutic area.

Meeting Specialists and Event Managers

Event specialists are responsible for managing the logistics of the events, such as booking flights and venues, as well as recording and collaborating with pharmaceutical companies to ensure the success of the meetings.

Try the following with these industries:

  • Build partnerships with meeting specialists to offer comprehensive solutions for advisory board projects. This can be done gradually but the quickest method is through referrals from trusted sources and existing networks.

I landed my first ad board project through a professional referral who introduced me to an event manager, and since then, my story with ad boards coverage has begun!

You’ll never know how and when you get your first ad board client, and I encourage you to stay proactive, persistent, and adaptable in your outreach efforts.
