Two Essential Skills You Need to Master for Advisory Board Coverage in Pharma

Hi Reader,

When it comes to covering pharmaceutical advisory board (ad board) meetings, not all information is communicated equally. Medical writers must be prepared to capture only what truly matters. Success in this type of project depends on mastering two critical skills:

1. Selective Listening

Ad boards are dynamic. You’ll hear clinical debates, off-topic comments, and side conversations, but your job is to filter the noise. Strong medical writers know how to distinguish casual chatter from high-value insights and identify when a key opinion leader (KOL) is giving feedback that could shape a product’s positioning, market access, or even future trial design.

It’s not about capturing everything. It’s about knowing what to capture and why it matters. That means listening with purpose, identifying recurring themes, and spotting consensus or disagreement that might be critical for the client’s next steps.

2. Writing with Clarity and Purpose

Once you’ve gathered the essential insights, the next challenge is communicating them clearly and powerfully. Clients rely on ad board reports to make critical decisions. That means your writing must be:

Clear: Avoid jargon and ambiguity. Make the insight accessible.

Concise: Deliver the message efficiently as busy stakeholders don’t have time to sift through fluff.

Impactful: Highlight implications. Go beyond “what was said” to “why it matters.”

The next time you work on an ad board project, think of yourself as a translator between clinical experts and strategic decision-makers. Remeber: Your words need to carry both accuracy and weight.

Hi Reader, One of the most frustrating things about freelance medical writing is unrealistic deadlines. I can tell you that I have faced this aspect countless times since I started working in the medical writing business. Clients have no idea how long a project can take, and deadlines are often discussed before the work itself is fully understood. Questions I often hear from my clients: “Can you finish this by tomorrow?” “It’s only a short deck.” “We just need a quick review.” And suddenly...
