When we perceive a threat—whether it's a looming deadline or a toddler's sudden wail—our brain’s amygdala triggers the "fight or flight" response. This leads to the release of stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, priming our bodies to react quickly. This ancient mechanism is invaluable in emergencies. However, when it’s activated repeatedly—like during everyday work-life stress—it can take a toll on our health in the form of stress and anxiety. A 2023 expert review published in Molecular Psychiatry (Nature Publishing Group) confirms that chronic stress impairs cognitive function, reducing our ability to focus, solve problems, and make decisions (1). For freelance medical writers who are also parents, these are vital skills—and the impact is personal. But layering motherhood on top of that creates a whole new level of complexity. It’s not just about switching tasks—it’s about switching roles, often within seconds.
